Desk report: Forty bodies have recently been recovered from a forest near the town of Kani in Myanmar’s northwestern region of Jagaing. An armed group fighting the military and Myanmar’s ambassador to the United Nations said.Hundreds of protesters have been killed in the country’s military since the military junta seized power on February 1 this year. Clashes have also broken out in Kani in recent months with a militia group formed against the military.A member of the militia group claimed that 40 bodies had been recovered from several places in the past few weeks. He also claimed that there were signs of torture on their bodies.Kiao Moi Tun, Myanmar’s ambassador to the United Nations, who was appointed by Suu Kyi’s government, also wrote to Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Tuesday. The bodies were recovered from three places last July, he wrote.He called on the Security Council and the international community to impose an arms embargo on Myanmar’s military, citing “clear evidence” of crimes against humanity. Kiao said there were no signs of military brutality, killings or arrests in the country.Kiao addressed the UN in protest of the military junta’s seizure of power in February. The diplomat, who lives in the United States, later refused to step down as ambassador, despite the military government’s announcement that he would be fired.
