Desk report: Five children have died while playing with grenades in the West African country of Nigeria. It exploded while playing with an unused grenade on the outskirts of Nagala, a border town in northeastern Cameroon. The French news agency AFD reported on Friday (August 13th) citing members of the militia. Local media outlet Sahara Reporters reported that anti-jihadi militiaman Omar Kachalla said the five children found the grenade while walking together in a field on the outskirts of the city. When they were playing with it, it accidentally exploded in their hands. Omar added that two of them died on the spot and three others died at a hospital in Cameron’s Mada. Another militiaman also confirmed the children had died. He also said that the grenade exploded there on Thursday. Incidentally, in August 2014, the Boko Haram jihadist group occupied the commercial center of Gamboru as well as the city of Nagala. Nigerian troops, backed by Canadian forces, regained control of the two cities in September 2015 after months of fighting.
