Desk report: The United States has expressed interest in working with the Taliban on a conditional return to power after two decades and recognizing the future Afghan government. US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken expressed this interest in an interview with CNN on Sunday. In the interview, Secretary Blinken said the United States is willing to work with the Taliban if their people respect the fundamental rights of women and adolescents and do not harbor terrorists in the country.”If the future Afghan government upholds the fundamental rights of its people and does not harbor terrorists, we can work with it and recognize the government,” Blinken said. He was responding to a question on whether President Joe Biden’s administration would recognize the Taliban-led government.”On the contrary, a government that does not do that will not uphold the fundamental rights of its people, including women and adolescents … will harbor terrorists … will plot to destroy the United States … it will not happen,” he said. The interviewer asked what the United States would do if the Taliban ever needed the help and support of the international community. In response, Blinken said that unless they upheld the basic rights of the Afghan people and provided support and sanctuary to terrorists who could carry out attacks in the United States, no sanctions would be lifted, sanctions would not be lifted, and they would not be allowed to travel.A compromise, peaceful and political settlement of the Afghan crisis is certainly a major part of the international community’s interest in recognizing the Taliban and working with them, including the United States, India and the UN Security Council. There is also the issue of respecting the fundamental rights of the people and severing all ties with terrorists.
The United States will recognize the Taliban on that condition
