Desk report: At least 30 soldiers have been killed in an attack by Houthi rebels on the largest air base in Yemen’s Lahaz region. Sixty more people were injured in the attack, 60 kilometers north of the capital Aden. On Sunday (August 29th), Arab News and Al-Jazeera quoted Southern Forces spokesman Mohammad Naqib as saying. The attack took place at a Saudi-led coalition military base in southwestern Yemen, Reuters reported. Houthi rebels have carried out several drone and missile attacks on al-Ind air base. Military training was underway at the base where the missile struck. Dozens of soldiers were exercising in the morning. Naqib said about 30 to 40 soldiers were killed in the attack. Rescuers are working there. He thinks the death toll could rise. Two medical sources said several bodies have been recovered from the main hospital in Lahore province so far. 18 people have been admitted here injured. They are undergoing treatment. It was not immediately clear if there were any civilian casualties. Doctors say there has been chaos at the military base since the blast. Troops are taking injured colleagues to safety. There are fears of more attacks. Locals say there were several explosions from the al-Ind area. Some Tiaz residents said long-range missiles were heard from the rocket launch site in the Houthi-inhabited eastern suburb. The Houthis have not yet commented on the attack. In 2014, Houthi rebels seized the capital, Sanaa, and overthrew the Saudi-backed government of Abd al-Rabbu Mansour Hadi. After Hadi fled to Riyadh, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates intervened in Yemen’s civil war in March 2015 to bring him back to power in Yemen. Since then, millions of Yemenis have been killed in fighting between the two sides and indiscriminate airstrikes by coalition forces. However, almost all important cities and areas of the country remained under Houthi control. The United Nations says the country, under siege by the Saudi alliance, is facing the world’s worst humanitarian crisis.
